Animals of the Maasai

The Maasai differentiate many animals, especially those which are hunted, are perceived as pests or are otherwise distinctive, culturally important, harmful or useful. Thus, several species have descriptive names relating to cattle, and the lion has several names, as does the marabou stork. Names vary by area and dialect, and may be either species-related or descriptive. Therefore, many species have more than one name, and some names are used for several, often unrelated species e.g. ‘the white-tailed one’ can be a mongoose or a wild dog so would need further description or appreciation of context to separate them further in Maa. As with the parallel plant list, some of the scientific names given may have been superseded, and there are likely to be a few errors from the source material, but this is as accurate a list as I could compile. Updates when available should expand upon the material, and correct errors which are identified. Maa names may vary a little in spelling (especially as many were derived phonetically from oral sources originally) and gender prefix/ending, and the language is tonal, but the most common spellings are given. The notes give English names, even if only for a broad group. The overall listing is divided into long sublists for birds and mammals, followed by shorter lists for herpetofauna and invertebrates, and finally any group broader than genus. Each list is alphabetical by scientific name/taxon.
